Project Overview
This project involved creating a cylindrical package and swing tag for a seaweed product by The Australian Seaweed Company. The design needed to appeal to a target audience interested in health-conscious and sustainable products, address budgetary considerations, and meet industry-standard packaging specifications.
The final submission required high-quality, print-ready designs, with an emphasis on sustainability, creativity, and functionality.
The Challenge
1. Engagement: Design packaging that captures the attention of eco-conscious and health-oriented consumers.
2. Sustainability: Incorporate eco-friendly materials and consider the product’s lifecycle (e.g., recyclability or compostability).
3. Technical Precision: Adhere to precise die-line measurements, glue zones, bleed requirements, and regulatory elements such as barcodes.
4. Aesthetic Balance: Create a visually appealing design that balances creativity with clear communication of the product’s benefits.
While the project was rooted in an Australian context, the design incorporates traditional Japanese wave patterns and Kanji to honour the origins of wakame seaweed, a staple in Japanese cuisine. This approach highlights the product’s authenticity and respects the global heritage of seaweed, connecting Australia’s sustainable practices with Japan’s rich culinary traditions.
The juxtaposition of Japanese motifs with Australian branding creates a unique fusion, positioning the product as both globally inspired and locally crafted. This choice ensures the packaging resonates with an international audience while celebrating the cultural journey of wakame from ocean to plate.
The Solution
• Packaging Design: A vibrant cylindrical package that features a bold red fish swimming amidst seaweed and ocean waves, symbolising the product’s natural and oceanic roots. The use of Kanji characters further reinforces the connection to Japanese cuisine.
• Swing Tag: A circular swing tag that highlights the product’s sustainable credentials and key benefits, such as being vegan and gluten-free.
• Sustainability: The design uses recyclable materials and eco-friendly printing methods, ensuring minimal environmental impact.
