Project Title: Gluttony: Evolution of Survival
Purpose and Concept:
“Gluttony: Evolution of Survival” examines the transformation of human consumption, contrasting the survival-driven hunting of early humans with modern overindulgence. The bull, inspired by prehistoric cave paintings, symbolizes the primal struggle for sustenance, while the fast food burger represents the current culture of gluttony. This artwork reflects on how the necessity for survival has evolved into a culture of excess.
Design Process:
1. Inspiration and Conceptualisation:
The concept arose from the desire to explore the duality of human consumption. Drawing from the aesthetic of ancient cave paintings, the bull serves as a poignant symbol of survival, while the modern fast food burger, with its vibrant artificiality, underscores the theme of gluttony.
2. Techniques and Materials:
The bull was hand-drawn using charcoal, echoing the raw and primitive essence of cave art. Additional elements, including the burger, fire, and dot patterns in the corner, were meticulously cut from magazines, creating a collage effect that highlights the stark contrast between the natural and the manufactured.
3. Composition and Experimentation:
The artwork’s composition layers these elements to create a dynamic interplay between past and present. The fiery background ties the imagery together, symbolizing both the heat of survival and the passion of modern excess. Text is strategically placed to enhance the narrative, adding depth to the theme.
Reflection:
This project was an opportunity to merge traditional and modern techniques into a cohesive narrative. The use of charcoal provided an authentic touch to the bull, while the collage technique brought a vivid and provocative edge to the piece. “Gluttony: Evolution of Survival” showcases my ability to create visually and conceptually engaging designs that encourage reflection and discussion.
